Foster a dog or cat!
How long do I have to foster the animal?
It depends – usually if there is a particular medical condition we are trying to get the animal healed from, it would be very important for fosterers to be willing and ready to foster for that period of time. It would be detrimental and even more damaging to the animal to be returned halfway through the healing process.
Do I have to pay for food, litter, toys, transport, etc?
No, we will raise funds to cover all agreed-upon costs. However, as we are purely donor-funded, it’s our responsibility to ensure the funds are appropriately used. Hence, before the fostering period, we will discuss with you the costs for items needed. You’ll just have to submit your receipts to us monthly and we will reimburse your expenses. We’d also advise against buying non-essential items (e.g. buying an expensive cat tree) which our shelter won’t be able to afford.
Do I have to pay for the medications and check-ups?
No, we will also raise funds to cover medications, special diets/supplements and check-ups. Please give us the receipts for all vet visits, medication, etc and we will reimburse you.
Although we intend to fully reimburse fosterers, you’ll have to pay upfront and it will take 1-2 weeks for us to process your receipts and transfer your funds. Hence, we’d advise that you should only offer to foster if you are comfortable financially in maintaining another animal in your household.
Am I responsible for finding them a new home?
No. We’ll be posting about them on our social media once they’re ready for adoption. But if you can utilize your networks to find them a forever fam, that would be wonderful.
Are there any criteria for fostering?
Yes. While we are deeply grateful to anyone who has a big heart to foster, please understand we must also be selective for the best interest of the animal. Because of point 1, we would be looking for those who are:
Experienced, especially in taking care of animals with medical conditions
Financially comfortable, as mentioned above
Ready and willing to commit time, effort, love and care for the animal
Not in a hurry or strict timeline (i.e. “by next month, I will be leaving the country for good so MUST give back the animal by then, whether they’re better or not.”)
Willing to let us do a house visit ahead of the fostering.
Willing to keep in touch with us. We’ll set up a Whatsapp groupchat and would love to answer your questions or hear your updates on how your foster-baby is doing. We’d also ask to be keep closely updated on their health and behavior please!
Willing to sign our foster contract, which will state all the terms on this page.
Ok, I think I can do this. What are the next steps?
Get in touch at mcdscatsponsor@gmail.com. We ask that you come and see the animal a few times (exact number to be discussed with us), to better understand him/her and make a clearer decision on whether he/she is suitable to join your family as a foster. Generally, for cats: at least 2 times; for dogs: at least 4 times. We would also ask to do a house visit or minimally a video call (for cats) to see your home.
Fostering saves lives 😊
Thanks for considering fostering our cat/ dog!
Our fosterers help us with cats and dogs that need special attention and medical care or behavioural training. This will give them greater chances of getting adopted!
So far, our fosterers have helped get new homes for several dogs and cats because they improved so much under loving foster care!
